The original retreat, completed in 1998, was built as a comfortable home-away-from-home to offer family members a place to stay at no charge. This enables family members to be near their loved one in the burn unit and be part of their recovery.

In 2002, a new and expanded facility was dedicated as the Jeffrey Vaden Chavis House at the Shirley Badke Retreat to honor both Shirley, a burn survivor and Jeff, a firefighter who lost his life in the line of duty.

The facility just went through an expansion funded by the Duke Energy Foundation and has a 50 bed capacity along with laundry and kitchen facilities, all provided at no cost to family members. Located on the campus of Doctors Hospital, it is walking distance to the Joseph M. Still Burn Center.
